ColliMate Space today announced the successful in-orbit execution of Nexus, its autonomous Satcom intelligence software, through ESA's OPS-SAT Space Lab service aboard OPS-SAT PRETTY. The demonstration highlights how ESA's OPS-SAT Space Lab enables industry to validate innovative onboard software concepts in orbit and accelerate their transition towards operational services. ColliMate's Nexus demonstration showed that software running at the edge can combine multiple sources of spacecraft and communications context, determine what is happening in real time, classify anomalous conditions and initiate a pre-authorized response without waiting for a complete ground analysis cycle.
Satellite communications systems operate in an environment that changes continuously. Spacecraft move rapidly relative to gateways, links appear and disappear, radio conditions evolve, environmental effects alter performance, and the meaning of a sensor reading depends on what the spacecraft was expected to be doing at that moment. Today, much of that context is assembled and interpreted on the ground. As networks grow in scale and complexity, onboard processing can complement existing ground-based capabilities by extending decision-support functions onboard the spacecraft.
Fusing Context at the Edge
Nexus moves part of that intelligence to the satellite. During the OPS-SAT PRETTY test, the onboard application fused simulated spacecraft sensor data, orbital state, radio-frequency information and environmental conditions into a live operational picture. One concrete decision context was communications legitimacy: the software maintained awareness of the spacecraft's orbit and of which authorized ground stations could plausibly communicate with it at a given time. That context helped it distinguish expected changes from conditions requiring attention, classify the anomaly and select an appropriate, pre-authorized reaction.
